Welcome to Lake-Sumter State College. We wish to thank you for offering your time and expertise as a peer reviewer of our substantive change to become a Level II Institution offering bachelor’s degrees. Most of the former community colleges in Florida now offer bachelor’s degrees. Our college was not among the early adopters. We decided that we would take a thoughtful and deliberative approach to this momentous change in the mission of our college. To ensure that the community’s interests were being served, we formed a New Vision Council comprised of leaders from business, government, education and community organizations. Following an investigative process of more than six months, the council recommended to the District Board of Trustees that our community needed the college to offer bachelor’s degrees.
Beginning in August 2011 our college team developed a solid work plan to meet the state requirements to justify the new degree and more importantly to prepare all components of our institution to support the new program and its students. Their efforts paid off as the State Board of Education gave its approval on March 28, 2012, followed by SACSCOC in June. A national search brought us a talented and experienced instructor to lead the program and classes started as planned in January 2013 with 37 students. With a successful spring and summer term behind us, we now look forward to the Committee visit.
Honesty and integrity are part of our core institutional values. It is our commitment to you as reviewers and to the Commission that integrity defines our relationship. We provide accurate and complete information to our students and our public, and we pledge to do the same with you, our reviewers. We look forward to your report.
